ALICJA ZIMNICKAS

Born in Puńsk (North-East Poland) in 1975 to Lithuanian parents. Alicija grew up in a small village which overlooked the 'no mans land' Polish/Lithuanian border. In an area of Poland which was part of Lithuania until 1918, Lithuanians made up the majority of the population and as a result Alicijas heritage remains a mixture of Polish and Lithuanian influence.
The Soviets control of Lithuania at this time restricted access across the border isolating the Lithuanian community living in Poland and creating the feeling for Alicija as child that is the edge of the world. Surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside, it was a picturesque setting which first inspired Alicijas creative streak and has continued to inspire her art ever since.

In 1990 aged just 15, Alicija made the brave and unusual decision to leave the family  to move to Kaunas, Lithuania to study Art. This was Lithuanias first year of independence and although still settling into it's new status, it was a proud and patriotic country that she found herself in. Living in student accomodation Alicija began studying Textile Art at Kaunas Art College.

Graduating in 1994, Alicja moved back to Poland, but to Warsaw, where she studied Industrial Design at the University of Fine Art, Warsaw. Painted under the direction of  Professors Jacek Sempoliński, Włodzimierz Pawlak and Andrzej Bieńkowski. Alicija excelled and in 1997 was awarded the coveted "Promoting Creativity" scholarship by the Polish Ministry of Culture & Art.
In 1999 Alicija graduated with a Masters Degree in Industrial Design.

Starting her formal career in 1998 as a graphic designer in Warsaw, Alicija continued to paint and exhibit regulary both in Poland and abroad. (See Exhibitions) From 2000 her profile as a successful artist flourished with individual and collective exhibitions taking place from Lithuania to Canada. Her paintings can also be found throughout the world in private collections, prestigious hotels such as The Marriot, Hilton and Le Regina and also adorning the walls of Novartis, Mastercard, BPP and Allianz. The Lithuanian embassy and Presidential Palace in Lithuania are also hosts of Alicijas work, wih the embassy holding a large collection.

During this time Alicja married and had two children and by 2007 Alicija was dividing her time between painting, interior and graphic design and being a mother.

In 2011, Alicja with her  family moved to Cambridge, England. She is studying Interior Design in London at the Chelsea College of Art and Design and continues to paint, exhibit and carry out interior design projects.
